Data sources and attribution
Updated
TimelineMap is built on open data and open-source software. Here is what we use and under which licenses.
Map data and tiles
Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License (ODbL). Map tiles are served by OpenFreeMap. The tile server sees which area of the map is being viewed, like any online map, but never your file or your history.
City and country names
City and country names come from GeoNames, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0). We use the "cities with a population over 15,000" dataset. A compact copy, trimmed to the fields we need, is bundled with the site and looked up on your device, so no coordinates are sent anywhere to find out which city you were in.
Map rendering
Maps are drawn with MapLibre GL JS, licensed under the BSD 3-Clause License.
Your data
Your file is processed on your device and never uploaded to our servers. See the privacy policy for what the page itself loads.
